Job Description

The 84 million ethnic Vietnamese (or Viet Kinh) represent the largest unreached ethnic group in Southeast Asia. While about 1% of the 46m Kinh in the Southern half of the country are Christian, only about 0.05% of the 38m Kinh in the North are. There are some Vietnamese churches but many places have few or no churches. We aim to partner with Vietnamese churches to help start new churches with a focus on less-reached places and on nurturing movements of churches planting churches. Not creating a new denomination, nor tied to one denomination, but partnering on a location-by-location basis. You will be based in an urban setting, living and working among Vietnamese, and part of a team of like-minded people who share the vision. The urban setting could be a suburb of a mega-city (total population ~8m) or a provincial capital city (typical population 200-500,000).

Responsibilities

We are seeking long term workers who with a passion to ignite indigenous biblical church movements through mobilizing and training Vietnamese believers as church planters. You will need to be personally involved in evangelism and discipleship, while identifying local believers who can be equipped in church planting methods such as evangelism and discipleship through oral storying. After language-study, you will usually need a working role that provides a visa. Wherever possible we seek work roles that complement our vision (see ‘English Teaching in Vietnam’ and ‘Professional Work in Vietnam’ for further information). However, professional qualifications are not a requirement for this role and we will explore individual options during the application period as well as after your arrival on the field. In your work life, and through other contacts, you will find open hearts that are ready to hear the truth of the gospel. You will have opportunities to walk alongside people as they either integrate into existing churches or, through their own networks, form new communities of believers. Long term workers will initially be in a two year program of Vietnamese language and culture integration based in one of Vietnam’s main cities, and then move to join a ministry team in an urban location. You will receive training in indigenous church planting through a training program and mentoring from local leaders. We encourage all members to grow in Christ-like character and service through our member development program and through mutual team accountability. You will be part of a local team for mutual encouragement, fellowship, prayer and worship. As we are committed to the growth of the local church, you will commit to being part of a local Vietnamese fellowship. You should be aware that gospel work in Vietnam requires wisdom and discretion; we follow certain security precautions (especially in communication) and seek to work with sensitivity to the local situation, whilst remaining bold with the gospel. Living standards in Vietnam are lower than in many sending countries, and you will need flexibility to face the challenges of living in a cross-cultural setting.

Qualifications

You should have experience in personal evangelism and discipleship, and have a good grasp of biblical truth. Experience in team work and mentoring and/or leading others would be an advantage. We would normally expect you to have had some Bible, theological and cross-cultural ministry training.
