Assist building a community center to serve marginalized children in rural Mongolia
Our ministry is expanding. At the moment it focuses on serving the marginalized children in our community, including those with neurodivergent, functional, or developmental challenges, as well as those facing social exclusion or economic hardships. We provide a center which offers holistic support for their development, offering academic help, and fostering social, physical and intellectual development educational games and play. These children often face stigma and lack opportunities to experience fun and acceptance, so we create a safe and nurturing environment where they can thrive. It will be expanding by building a new facility. This role will directly support our mission by helping to construct a new facility that will provide a safe, all-weather indoor playground for local children, including those with functional limitations. Through hands-on building work, short-term workers will engage in physical ministry, contributing to the creation of a space where children can play, learn, and grow year-round. This project aligns with our vision to improve the well-being of marginalized children by providing them with opportunities for development, regardless of their challenges. The ger (yurt) district of Khovd is a vibrant blend of tradition and resilience, nestled between rocky mountains and a beautiful flowing river. In the hot, dry summers, thousands move their traditional yurts to live by the river, creating a dynamic and picturesque community. The cold winters offer a chance to connect deeply with families in their homes, blessing them through meaningful relationships. There is a mix of apartment blocks and yurts in walled yards side by side, it’s a unique and inspiring place to serve and witness life in all its beauty and challenges. After a 30-minute drive from the town, you could reach the dry desert steppe, where nomadic herders live with their goats and/or camels.
Primary responsibilities will include tasks such as site preparation, assisting with the structural assembly, and supporting the overall construction process. You will help with laying foundations, organizing materials, and ensuring the work is safe and efficient. There may also be opportunities to lead devotions or worship sessions for the team, depending on the schedule and needs. This role focuses on contributing to the hands-on work required to create a safe, all-weather indoor playground for the community.
For this role, previous experience in construction or skilled trades such as engineering, plumbing, or electrical work is helpful, but individuals with a strong willingness to learn and contribute are also welcome. While formal certificates or diplomas in these fields are beneficial, hands-on experience and practical skills are highly valued. Experience in cross-cultural ministry is helpful but not required, as the role primarily focuses on construction tasks. The ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly in situations where language barriers may exist, requires adaptability, flexibility, and a collaborative skill.
The language barrier can be challenging, and daily tasks, housing, and general living conditions will be very different from what you might be used to. The first few days may feel challenging as you adjust to the local environment and routines, but once you accept and adapt to these differences, things tend to run more smoothly. Being far from "home" requires flexibility, patience, and a willingness to embrace a new way of life. While the town and lifestyle may differ greatly from what you're familiar with, you will find numerous opportunities to serve in ministry and make a meaningful impact as you work to grow the kingdom.
In 1990, there were less than 10 known Christians in Mongolia. Today there are more than 40,000 believers meeting in more than 400 churches.
