Provide mental health counselling, training, and support to help with complex individual and family problems
You will be bringing God’s transformation to Cambodia through providing counselling services. You will help families and individuals dealing with many kinds of problems including PTSD; family, parenting, and marital problems; suicide; stress management; problems with self-esteem and behavioral or affective disorders; families dealing with mental illness; addictions and substance abuse. Possible placement opportunities include work in a mental health care centre or in various centers that work specifically with mental health issues, prisoners, sex traffic/sexual assault victims, or those struggling with addictions. As mental health problems often present as physical problems, you may also find opportunities to work alongside doctors in a hospital or medical clinic. You will be providing direct counselling services, but a vital part of your job will be in mentoring, supervising, and training of Cambodians to do this work. Working as a teacher and/or advisor in a counseling/training center, bible school or in the Psychology Department of the Royal University of Phnom Penh may also be an option.
The first year will primarily be focused on: - language and culture learning - beginning exploration of counselling needs and opportunities - networking to build contacts within the current mental health system The second year you will: - begin part-time work in a supported environment where you can begin working using the Khmer language - continue studying Khmer language part-time - continue exploring and networking in Cambodian and the mental health system here As you grow in language ability and understanding, you will be able to begin providing various services: - Direct counselling services. You will learn how to adapt your learning to the developing Cambodian context, purposing to practice with integrity and according to ethical standards as an example for the mental health community in Cambodia. - Teaching. You may find opportunities to teach, anything from basic mental health education (small groups or healthcare workers) to teaching professional development courses in a counseling/training center or higher-level courses in an MA psychology/counseling course. You will need to expect to creatively prepare the content for those who may not have much mental health background understanding. - Mentoring/supporting. You will have opportunities to build into the lives and practice of budding Cambodian mental health workers. - Supervision. You will find many opportunities to provide professional supervision for counselors/psychologists, and to provide supervision training/mentoring. - Developing the capacity of the church as God’s instrument in bringing healing to the world. Gather information on community resources and specialists, and facilitate the collaboration between different parts of the mental health system.
