Teaching English and/or hospitality skills in Mekong Region
The peoples of this Southeast Asian nation live in physical and spiritual poverty. Most are subsistence farmers who face the pressure to produce enough food for their family each day. Coupled with that, people are constantly afraid that they are not pleasing the spirits, whom they believe have the power to bring prosperity and calamity, health and sickness. Our desire is to share abundant life in Jesus, to see people living in the joy of a restored relationship with God. We operate an English and vocational training center, a bakery and a cafe. Local clients prefer to learn English from native or near-native speakers. Team members support the business through teaching English, 12 hours per week. The rest of their time will be spent in learning the language, engaging with locals, investing your other skills and experience in building disciple-makers. Short-termers are immediately involved in the life of our community. This is all part of a larger vision for the people of the Mekong region. The Mekong River flows from China through Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Along this river live a great diversity of peoples, cultures, and languages with unique opportunities and challenges and most with very few believers in Jesus Christ. Much of the year, the weather is hot. For some of that time, it also rains! For about 3 months of the year, the weather is in the perfect zone, cool and dry. Our town is rather a scruffy place, but it is a hub for travel around the region. There are local style markets and small supermarkets, with a few restaurants for both local and foreign food. Basic health care is available, but for major health issues, we travel approximately 2 1/2 hours' drive to the neighboring country.
Prepare English classes. Teach two classes in the evenings to a maximum of 12 students. Attend and participate in teachers' meetings to further your skills as a teacher. Attend and participate in team meetings, where we listen to the Word, engage in worship through song, and bring our needs and our praises to God in prayer. Be part of a team cell group, where people read and reflect on the Word together and pray for each other. People who can teach English can come for 4 months or longer (or just 6 weeks in the summer term) Term dates are as follows: Term 1: February - May Summer: June - August (with a full vacation B study program as well) Term 2: August - December
Native or near-native level of English. Teaching experience is good but not necessary. A basic TEFL or TESOL certificate is good. We can recommend possibilities for completing these certificates. We will train you in our particular style of English teaching, but a TEFL certificate is important for obtaining approval for your visa. -adaptability and flexibility as things don't work the same as at home
As a teacher in this country, you will be required to dress in appropriate clothing, as teachers are highly respected. You will be part of a team, so there are some things you should be willing to do: be able to have fun together and even laugh at yourself at times, be willing to engage face to face with people, be able to try new things and go into unfamiliar situations.
The church in Laos is under constant pressure as the communist government actively promotes Buddhism.
