In recent years the number of young people moving from other East Asian countries to study in Taiwan has been increasing. At the beginning of 2019 this included around 13 000 from Vietnam, 12 000 from Indonesia, 17 000 from Malaysia, 9 000 from Japan, and 3000 from Thailand.

Job Description

We are looking for people called by God to join us in our outreach to the East Asian diaspora in Taiwan. You could come as a volunteer or as a full-time worker. OMF International’s Diaspora Ministries Taiwan team seeks to evangelize and disciple East Asians who are living away from their home countries studying in Taiwan. We seek to prepare and equip them to bring the gospel back to their own people and others. A good level of Mandarin is needed in order to live comfortably in Taiwan, so non-Mandarin speakers will need to learn some Mandarin (1-2 years). Need to adjust to a busy, crowded, and often noisy environment. Life in Taiwan is often exciting but also exhausting.

Responsibilities

• Start a Bible study for international students. • Developing ongoing discipleship teaching Host events to celebrate Chinese New Year, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc. • Partner with churches and Christian university fellowships • Befriend newcomers to your country, welcome them to your home, and introduce them to your church and community. • Offer Mandarin classes/conversation for international students through your church. • Offer students help with rides for groceries, cooking, and other errands. • Host “Around Town” events: take international students new to your area on a tour of different points of interest.

Qualifications

• Have a passion to reach East Asian students in Taiwan. • Have the ability to speak these visitors’ native language, or being willing to learn! • Have a heart for evangelism, and the creativity and initiative to try out new outreach models and strategies. • Have flexibility and the ability to function well in unstructured situations. • Are willing to commit time to language and culture study. • Have a good level of English for working with an international team. • Be willing to adjust to working with those from other cultures.

Living Situation

Missionaries will live in apartments in the neighbourhood where they are serving, mostly in urban environments. Taiwan is wealthy and advanced, so the standard of living is relatively high. Communications and transportation are excellent.
