Job Description

Taiwan has a population of approximately 23 million. The working-class population tends to follow traditional folk religion and ancestor worship. According to Operation World, Taiwan remains the only Chinese society which has never had a spiritual breakthrough. Through God’s grace, the Puxin church planting team longs to see churches in every village, disciples in every family of Puxin township. This role has three objectives that fulfill our team's vision and mission: • to build relationship with local students, their families and the teachers; • to meet the local community’s felt need for English/Science; and • to present the Bible stories to the students and shape their worldviews. Our desire is to also see that our short-term workers (aka SAW) leave Taiwan with a greater understanding of mission work, particularly among the working class, and through discipleship with our missionaries, develop a long-term vision of mission in their lives for the future. Serve Asia Workers (SAWs) will live with our church planting team or local contacts, in the neighbourhood where the team is serving. The culture, language, food and values of the people are primarily Taiwanese.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and run English/Science learning activities with the guidance of the missionary team. The lessons will involve games, basic English/Science learning, and Bible stories presented in Mandarin/English that aims to change worldviews. The students include preschoolers (3-6 years old), elementary (7-12 years old), and middle school (~13 years old). • Visit shopkeepers, students' families and other community members • Experience some immersive language and cultural learning • Work alongside a long-term church planting missionaries and learn about missionary life

• Commitment to the ministry of the Word of God and prayer • Able to relate well with people of all ages and can initiate conversations • Maturity to influence others positively in informal settings • Able to explain your own faith in simple and relevant ways • Having Mandarin is a big advantage although not a requirement • Ability to connect with kids who are not necessarily well behaved or polite and may show dysfunctional behaviours

Living Situation

This opportunity is for those who can handle the commitment to both language study and ministry. They will live in a rural area of Puxin with few or no English speakers apart from their immediate team members. SAWs need to be willing to live outside of their comfort zone. Ideally, SAWs will live on their own, near the missionaries, and get around by bike or walking. For this reason, it is recommended for the SAWs to be able to ride a bicycle/e-bike/motorbike. It would be great if SAWs also have the following attitudes: • Willing to persevere when tired/hot or when things don’t go as planned • A desire to learn and put learning into practice. • Be available and able to work as part of a team • A willingness to cross multiple cultures, as part of an international team • Be flexible and open to new ideas
