Job Description

Service industry personnel work long hours in department stores, smaller shops and restaurants. Their long work hours and family backgrounds cut them off from most existing churches. The shopworkers church was established to reach out to these people and provide them with a spiritual home that meets their unique needs. The goal of the church is to establish a Christian witness in every department store and shopping district in Taipei and beyond. Small groups and churches meet in convenient locations late at night after work is over (after 10 pm). Dormitories are established to provide housing and help develop community. More workers are needed to encourage workplace evangelism, disciple new Christians, and train leaders. Many of those reached come from difficult family backgrounds and require a great deal of time and counseling. Missionaries will live in apartments in the neighborhood where they are serving, in an urban environment. Taiwan is wealthy and advanced, so the standard of living is relatively high. Communciations and transportation are excellent. The culture, language, food and values of the people are primarily Chinese.

Responsibilities

* Visitation of shopworkers to build and develop relationships. *Evangelism - one to one and in small groups. * Discipleship - helping to establish new groups and churches. * Training Taiwanese believers to take on ministry and leadership roles.

Qualifications

* A passion to reach the lost and experience in evangelism. This is more important than higher theological qualifications or prior experience in church planting. * Some formal Bible college training is necessary. The government also requires incoming missionaries to have recently spent one to two years in Christian ministry. * Experience or training in counseling is a plus as many people in this ministry come from broken and dysfunctional family backgrounds. * Must be willing to work as part of a team under Taiwanese leadership.

Living Situation

* Willing to learn Mandarin to a high level in order to communicate effectively. * Need to adjust to a busy, crowded, and often noisy environment. Life in Taiwan is often exciting but also exhausting. * Oral methods of communciation (e.g. Bible storying, testimonies, music, drama) are most effective in evangelism and discipleship. A willingness to learn these ways of communicating the gospel is essential. * Taiwanese people are deeply religious. Spiritual attack and demonic activity are not uncommon. Spiritual maturity is needed to deal with these situations. * Practical skills or training in areas that can be used to serve working class people are a plus. e.g. counseling, social work, education
