Hundreds of Japanese in their 20’s and early 30’s come to Ireland each year to study in one of the many English language schools in Dublin or as exchange students at one of the four Universities. Increasing numbers of Japanese are relocating to Ireland for work. We are looking for a native/near native Japanese speaker to join our team for up to a year to help us reach many of these with the Gospel. This role could be combined with up to 6 months study at an English language school in Dublin. Diaspora / International Students, Personal Evangelism, Personal Discipleship, Buddhists, Young Adults and Students 6 weeks to 6 months, 6-11 months
Japanese are on the move and coming to Christ! Many feel that it is natural to explore Christianity while in Ireland and have more time and freedom to do so than while living in Japan. Our hope is that they will return to Japan with an increased interest in and knowledge of Christianity and the Bible. Japanese students and young adults on working holiday visas are particularly open. Most of those who come on a working holiday visa or as students will eventually return to Japan. We want them to come to Christ, be discipled and equipped to become disciple-makers themselves, contributing to the church in Japan and beyond. There are many opportunities in Dublin to meet, befriend and bring Christ’s love to Japanese people. As part of our team in Dublin, you will invest in the lives of Japanese young adults, evangelizing and discipling individuals with a special focus on preparing returnees before their return to Japan. We are looking for individuals with a pioneering spirit to be able to reach out to and disciple young Japanese people in Dublin.
• Making contact with and befriending Japanese people • One-on-one relationship building • Showing hospitality • Sharing your faith in the context of friendship • Inviting Japanese to International cafés run by local churches • Inviting Japanese to Dublin Japanese Christian Fellowship • Helping to lead Bible studies for seekers and Christians
• Native or near-native Japanese communication skills. • A sufficient level of English to be able to function independently in daily life. • Some experience of serving in church ministry (eg Sunday school teacher) or parachurch youth ministry (eg University campus Bible study leader). • Ability to work cooperatively with other missionaries, mission organizations and with local churches of varying denominations. • Willingness to receive training and mentoring from church and mission leaders. • Ability to function well in an unstructured situation with a fair amount of freedom
Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland with an urban area population of around 1.5 million. It is a cosmopolitan city which has been transformed by three decades of multiculturalism. You will live either in a Homestay with an Irish family or in a shared house with other Internationals. You may choose to study English and/or work part time alongside your role with OMF Returnee Focus. This could give you natural opportunities to connect with Japanese people on working holiday or student visas. You would need to pray for financial support – the level of support would depend on accommodation, category of visa, whether working or not, length of stay etc.
