Tokyo Multi-Ministries

Want to experience a variety of ways to serve and connect to Japanese people?

Personal Evangelism
6 weeks to 6 months, 6-11 months
Japan

Job Description

Building connections and friendships to Japanese is what it's all about; such as meeting a friend for coffee to share the difference God has made in your life. Along with that, the reality of mission life is about serving and being available to help where needed, so that may mean cleaning toilets or passing out food to the homeless or helping set up chairs for a church outreach. So whether it is a conversation or an act of service, come be a part of contributing to building God's church in Japan in big and little ways. Be prepared for lots of trains! Several times a week you will travel to a different part of greater Tokyo to observes and participate in a ministry. Some of these may include Returness and Homeless. Another way to serve may be helping clean rooms, wash sheets and do odd jobs at the OMF Ichikawa Guest Home. Depending on the needs and ministry availabilities, this most likely will look different for each worker (such as one day here, one afternoon there, etc.….). Before you come, we will talk through what these ministries will look like (although please come with flexibility and a willingness to serve however needed!!). Each SA Worker will have a Japanese church they attend on Sunday and possibly helping at a church outreach or English class.

Responsibilities

This opportunity will be available from March 2026. See Homeless, Returnees, Guest Home Help or Social Media opportunities to get an idea of some what might be available. Each week will look a little different, so come ready to be flexible and willing to serve. Up to one day a week is set aside to study Japanese language, usually on your own, but if you are in Japan longer, there might be free city-offered classes or on-line teachers available. Each week there is fellowship time with other Serve Asia workers and regular chances to get to know other OMF long term workers.

Qualifications

Willingness to take initiative and get to know people. Friendly and welcoming. Willingness to serve where needed. Good time management and able to work on your own. Able to work well with others and on an international team. Willing to learn, adapt and adjust to fit in to a different culture. *Depending on the need and timing, this opportunity may be available for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. Placements to serve are limited depending on the number of Serve Asia workers, hosts, capacity of the program, time of year, etc.

Living Situation

As far as your living accommodation, you will most likely be living in a single room with a shared living and kitchen space at either the OMF Ichikawa Guest Home (if coming for 1 month) or a Japanese share house (if coming for 3, 6 or 12 months). The share house that our Kanto Serve Asia workers have been staying in recently is a big, dorm-like 4 story building with up to 50 people. You will have your own room but share the kitchen, dining, living and shower/bathrooms with others. This gives a chance to have your own space and privacy but also for you to engage and get to know others. And this gives you a daily, natural place to practice your Japanese!! Living life in Japan is a part of your ministry as well. Many other Serve Asia workers have made good connections with Japanese and even had gospel-oriented conversations around a cup of coffee or making some pasta in the shared kitchen.
