Job Description

Over 34 million people, one quarter of the population of Japan, lives outside of major urban areas. There are many small towns without a local church. Churches that are present are often small, ageing and struggling to reach their local communities. Many people have little if no contact with believers and little chance to hear about Jesus. You will help a Japanese pastor planting a new church in Ofunato, a fishing town on the Pacific coast, an area with very little gospel witness. Your days will be varied and may include opportunities to work with people of all ages. Join us in prayer every day for church members and for our community. We welcome creativity, passion for the gospel and a willingness to serve in new ways. Iwate prefecture is full of nature, with high mountains and a rugged Pacific coastline. Life is quiet and seasonal, and people are traditional in outlook, shy and reserved, but in time form deep and lasting friendships. Ofunato was affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. While the town has recovered and is returning to normal, the spiritual needs are still very great.

Responsibilities

Your ministry may include: - Leading or assisting in English classes where you will share the gospel - Supporting the running of evangelistic events with a range of people in the local community from children and youth to adults and elderly. - Building friendships with Japanese people - Attending and serving with a local church - Praying with and supporting the church and team - Practical help around the church where you will work, such as cooking, cleaning, setting up rooms, tidying up after meetings, taking out the trash, basic gardening etc.

Qualifications

You must be over 18 years old, faithful in your walk with Jesus and ready to connect with the people you meet. While not required, some Japanese language is helpful. An attitude of flexibility and willingness to serve are essential, as well as a heart to learn and serve.

Living Situation

You will be living in accommodation provided by a local church. Life will be simple but comfortable. Regional areas by Japanese standards may mean adjustment for those used to living in urban areas. Please come willing to take initiative with an attitude of flexibility, willingness, and creativity. Time commitment: 6 weeks to 6 months, beginning anytime during the year. Approximate cost: USD35/day, excluding travel costs, insurances, and administrative fees.
