The Japan Field Finance Manager (FM) plays a critical role in the operation of the OMF Japan Field and its mission to reach the Japanese people with the Gospel. At the same time financial, regulatory, technical, and pastoral, the FM role is demanding, but never dull.
The Japanese are the second largest unreached people group in the world. OMF Japan has a vision to see a vibrant church in every community. Currently, we have around 145 workers in over 30 municipalities in northern and eastern Japan, with a wide variety of different ministry approaches and target groups within Japanese society. The Finance Team, of which the Finance Manager is an essential component, manages all the financial, regulatory, and stewardship aspects of operating a multi-national mission agency in a highly developed, technologically advanced society. The FM’s main focus is in managing the accounts and movement of funds, with a significant component of the role being in relating with missionaries about their finances, and providing both spiritual and technical advice. The FM position is vacant from March 2025.
Good communication is fundamental to the FM role; liaising with individual Japan Field members regarding their support, expense claims, and other financial queries Working with the Japanese Accounts Clerk to maintain accurate, up-to-date accounts for the Japan Field Timely, accurate reporting of Japan Field financial information Timely payments of missionary allowance, staff salaries, tax and contractual obligations Assisting the Finance Sector Leader in maintaining and developing OMF Japan financial processes and policies Helping develop OMF Japan's annual budget You will attend a Japanese church and it may be possible to have some local ministry involvement depending on your gifts.
No specific qualifications or work experience is required. Very helpful would be: A good understanding of accounting Spreadsheeting and data management skills High level of English communication skills Some level of Japanese is very helpful, but not essential A university level qualification (any subject) is needed for a Japanese work visa. Flexibility is an absolute must – no two days are ever the same. A commitment to teamwork and good communication are also critical to success. OMF is a multi-cultural organisation – being able to work with people with a different perspective is important. This is not just a straightforward bookkeeping role; it requires creative thinking and management of a varied and busy workload. The FM role touches the lives of all OMF Japan members. Being able to ‘care why’ (rather than just explain the policy) and go the extra mile for the person the FM is serving, is critical to success in the role. The FM position is not salaried; the FM is a normal OMF missionary, needing to pray in his/her financial support. The Japan FM role is complex. Competency takes at least a year of (on-the-job) training, so this role is suited to someone called to serve in Japan long-term (not just 1 or 2 years). While Japanese is not essential for the FM role, we will provide the opportunity for Japanese classes and part-time study alongside the finance work.
The Finance Manager works from our office in Ichikawa, part of the greater Tokyo metropolis. Tokyo is crowded; streets and houses are small. Japanese society is very efficient, and public safety is extremely high. Summers in Tokyo are very hot, and winters fairly cold. There is a small community of OMFers around the Ichikawa office, who can provide support.
Japan needs workers to partner with the Japanese church in the task of sharing the gospel and making disciples.
