Serving alongside a rural outreach team to make connections and build up existing relationships in a working-class community, by running a winter camp at the local elementary.
Meishan is a small rural town in Chiayi County, with a surprisingly large community of young families and the elderly. Our rural outreach team hopes to first reach the community through the ministry activities at the local school and our Gospel Center, and we focus a lot on family and children’s ministries. This is the door that God has opened to them right now, so they want to be faithful in making contacts and building up these relationships so they can see how life with Jesus is different from their deepy rooted folk religious faith. Through God’s grace, they hope to see the Gospel planted, and disciples grown and multiplying amongst the working-class people in Meishan. This opportunity will help them to fulfill our vision and mission because with only 3 of them making up the team, it is difficult to do any larger scale ministry events/activities. Even though they are involved with the school during the school year, they are unable to run larger activities without more workers. A short-term team would be a tremendous help in continuing to make contacts and build/strengthen relationships with the students and their families. This is also a wonderful opportunity for the short-termer to experience and gain better understanding of the spiritual needs in small rural towns of Taiwan.
With the guidance of the missionaries, the team would run a Winter Cooking Camp (content of what is cooked can be discussed together). Team would need to prepare the cooking content for the camp (or our Meishan team can choose the recipes ahead of time), as well as Gospel content (their testimonies) and recreational items (morning excercises/dance, indoor/outdoor games). Prior to arrival on the field, we would need to have regular communication. We also expect them to participate in Orientation and Debrief on site.
• Must be at least 18 years old • Able to relate well with children, taking initiative in interactions • Maturity to influence children positively during formal and informal interaction • Able to explain your own faith in simple and relevant ways • Mandarin needed (at least 2/3 of the team will need to be able to converse in Mandarin). • Have functional English but do not need to be fluent • Ability to connect with kids who are not necessarily well-behaved, polite, and/or may show dysfunctional behaviours • Willingness to do thorough preparation for the activities is required • Willingness to persevere when tired/cold, or when things are not going as smoothly as planned
Short termers will be living at the Meishan Gospel Center. It will be simple living, but we will do our best to make it comfortable. Members must have the ability to tolerate the winter cold during camp (there is no central heating, however our Center does have heat lamps and some of the air con units have heat included). Climbing stairs up to 2nd or 3rd floor will be part of your day (at the Center and at the school). We ask that the team members do not leave our ministry location during their time of service, so they can be fully committed to being here in ministry with the children and community. Humble and learning attitude is expected.
Taiwan is a wealthy country and is wide open to Christian activities and to missionary work.
