Job Description

When missionary families first arrive in Japan, they enter an intensive period of language and cultural learning. OMF encourages both husbands and wives to participate fully—but for parents with young children, this season can be especially challenging. That’s where you come in. By caring for their children, you provide a practical and deeply meaningful support—freeing parents to focus on their studies, grow in confidence, and prepare for a lifetime of ministry in Japan. You’ll be serving at the Japanese Language and Culture Centre (JLCC) in Sapporo, where most families live nearby, creating a close-knit and supportive community. Your role may seem simple, but its impact is profound. By supporting missionary families during this foundational season, you are helping equip them for long-term gospel ministry across Japan.

Responsibilities

• Care for young children (typically ages 0–6) from a variety of cultural backgrounds • Engage them in safe, creative, and nurturing play • Serve primarily during weekdays (mornings and sometimes afternoons, Monday–Friday) • Occasionally assist with light housekeeping tasks • Be engaged in local church life and the wider missionary community

Qualifications

• A committed follower of Jesus Christ who is excited to serve in a cross-cultural missions context • Someone who enjoys being with young children and has relevant experience • Basic first aid knowledge (or willingness to learn) • Comfortable communicating in English (additional languages are a plus) • Adaptable, proactive, and able to take initiative • A good sense of humor—always helpful in a lively childcare setting!

Living Situation

This role takes place in Sapporo, Hokkaido, known for its beautiful seasons and snowy winters—so a willingness to embrace the cold is important! Accommodation is typically provided in a nearby apartment or guesthouse within walking distance of the language center.
