Serving Third Culture Kids
Serving Third Culture Kids

Third Culture Kids are children and youth who identify with people of similar cross-cultural experiences more than they do with their passport culture and host cultures. There are challenges and benefits of the Third Culture heritage, and the many transitions involved. TCKs are often exposed to multilingualism and multiculturalism from an early age, and the culture and environment of these formative years are fundamental in making them into who they are. OMF International desires to see families with thriving TCKs who are growing in faith, and who understand and value their TCK experience, becoming all that God desires them to be. We do this by coming alongside parents providing encouragement, resources and educational support, caring for more than 900 TCKs and their families throughout East Asia. We recognize each child as an individual with their own needs and potential, and we aim to give them the best opportunities possible to find God’s purpose for their lives. We journey with TCKs and families, keeping up-to-date with each family’s situation and potential needs as well as proactively supporting parents in their responsibilities towards their children. Enabling parents to network with others who have similar cross-cultural experiences is another important part of our care. As a team of caregivers we also speak about third culture experiences and TCK care at conferences, schools, with leaders and others both within and outside the Fellowship. Throughout OMF we have both long and short-term opportunities for those with professional or voluntary experience working with children. You could serve TCKs through being Boarding Home Parents or Assistants to TCKs at our Boarding Homes. Or teach at international day and boarding schools serving missionary communities in various parts of East Asia. Homeschool Tutors or Assistants can teach home-schooled children during their parents’ language study, or provide additional expertise in particular subject areas or languages. You could also serve TCKs by joining the children’s programs during OMF’s conferences or orientation programs for missionaries. We seek workers who: • Are committed Christians • Have a personal commitment to cross-cultural mission in East Asia • Have cross-cultural experience (preferred, though not necessary) • Have teaching qualifications or experience, if applying to teach TCKs • Are able to work in a team • Are good communicators • Willing to go through a screening process for children’s and youth workers TCK workers have the unique opportunity to further God’s glory in the lives of TCK families as well as among East Asia’s peoples.
