As in all parts of the world, many people in Asia find themselves trapped in cycles they cannot escape from. While we believe firmly that the ultimate hope for everyone is found in the gospel of Jesus Christ, we work to meet people’s felt needs in these urgent situations. This not only gives us a place in the community and helps establish relationships of trust, it is our act of obedience to love and serve the poor and needy. Every society has social outcasts, the people shunned and left out of the usual community and opportunities. Sometimes this comes from the fear and social stigma surrounding a disease such as AIDS. For others this rejection starts from birth based on various physical and mental challenges. Still others are simply judged for their economic status or ethnic background. Some people are caught in much more vicious circumstances such as drug and alcohol addiction. Others are intentionally exploited through the sex industry. The urban poor in all major cities struggle through the cycles of surviving today and watching education opportunities, family relationships, and stability for the future crumble around them. In all of these situations, we try to meet the urgent needs of the individuals in these situations. OMF places doctors and community health workers in communities fighting disease and health standards challenges. We start centers and programs to help those with disabilities, with limited job opportunities, or caught in addiction. We send workers into the red light districts to try and help women escape the sex industry. Our heart is to love and serve individuals in these situations and see them give their lives to Christ. However, we also pray and work to see the “big picture” of these situations resolved and to see the local church in these places working towards real hope and transformation for these places. We are looking for believers who: - Have a desire to see individuals and communities transformed - Are willing to go into the hard places and serve people that society has abandoned - Are servant-hearted, flexible and have skills related to medicine, community development, social work, counselling, etc - Are committed to work with others to build up the church for effective service - Preferably have cross-cultural experience - Willing to learn new skills, languages and persevere with a long-term view - Have one to two years of bible school training with cross-cultural or missions studies Please read below to see opportunities in this area of work.
